Modern Galley Kitchen

The galley kitchen gets its name from its resemblance to the kitchen aboard a vessel— called the “galley.” The biggest hallmark of galley kitchen design is its layout: cabinet units, counters, and appliances connect together in straight lines and face each other. It often includes ceiling hung cabinets, hanging pots and dish racks, utilizing vertical space with great efficiency. All of this maximizes storage, and requires little movement to accomplish tasks. Galley kitchens are popular in apartments and small homes, where space is at a premium. But they can work in larger spaces as well, where the nature of the design creates a streamlined look. So before you remodel and ditch your galley kitchen, consider giving it a makeover instead. There’s a lot to love about this classic design. Check out these example of gorgeous galley kitchen design and get inspired. By Rebecca Thienes Cherny Expanded View >

White galley kitchen with natural wood countertops.  While many galley kitchens are dark because each side is a wall, this particular kitchen is much brighter with windows on one side.  This is also something to keep in mind – galley kitchens, depending on where they’re located in a home or apartment can be dark.  Source: Zillow DigsTM

This galley kitchen design is efficient for those who are short on space. With several storage options that did not leave out the cooker and the refrigerator, the homeowner can make the most of the wall space available in the kitchen. Even the dishwasher was concealed behind a cabinetry like the cooker and refrigerator. With the cabinets light-colored, open-shelving system maintained and the installation of a moderately large pass-through window, it is actually a beautiful and functional galley kitchen.

Here’s another example of a single-line kitchen with island.  It’s technically not a galley kitchen, but is often referred to as one.  This is a very popular design since it enjoys the benefits of a galley kitchen, but is brighter and more open.

Here’s a modern galley kitchen with a narrow breakfast bar on one side.  Unlike many galley kitchens, this one is designed with deep counters on one side, which is a real luxury.

Tall cabinets can be tough to reach. That’s what makes a library ladder among the very best galley kitchen ideas. Besides providing practical value, a ladder can look great too, especially if it’s a vintage find. In this traditional galley kitchen, glass fronts help provide easy sight lines to the items inside the gorgeous cabinets.

If I had a long, narrow kitchen like the “before” here, I would opt for a galley-style floor plan almost identical to this one. Designed by architect Cindy Black for her clients Laura and Blake, this new kitchen boasts an ingenious use of space. What was once a cramped kitchen — with minimal counter space and numerous obstacles jutting out into the main walkway — is now a bright, airy and modern room with tons of space for cooking and storage. I particularly love the inset shelving above the sink, and the combo of warm floors and cool, ocean tiles, not to mention all that fresh white — dreamy. Amazing job, Cindy! — Kate

With an exit off to the left of the rear of the kitchen, this could be referred to as a galley kitchen.  However, one may refer to this as a U-shaped kitchen.

Note, this style of kitchen should not be confused with single-line kitchens with an island which can look like a galley kitchen, but technically isn’t.  We show examples of single line kitchens with islands here (our Definitive Kitchen design Guide).

Here’s one of my favorite galley kitchen designs.  It’s all white with a wood floor and includes a decently sized island, but the island doesn’t hinder going from side-to-side too much because this isn’t a terribly long kitchen.  Moreover, the windows add a great deal of natural light, which is a real bonus.

This type of galley kitchen will work very well for those who have lots of kitchen utensils and other items to be put away in storage. While the more important and rarely used items go into the cabinets, the stainless steel cookware, almost of the same material and shade with the handles of the cabinets, is proudly displayed through hanging storage option.

Perhaps inspired by a greenhouse, this incredible galley kitchen design takes full advantage of abundant glazing to achieve a truly unwashed space that, in part thanks to its cathedral ceiling, looks much, much bigger than it really is. It’s so airy, were it not grounded by the rich plank wood flooring, the kitchen looks as though it would float away.

Turning a dark, cramped cooking area into a light, airy kitchen is no easy feat. DIY by ADD accomplished this with a galley kitchen design that entirely replaces the upper cabinets on one side of the room with open shelving—and by swapping a glass door in for the old wood exterior door.

From the layout of the flooring to the placement of the chandelier, everything in this super-sleek galley kitchen design seems to draw your eye to the dining area. At the same time, in the kitchen area itself, stainless steel appliances and frosted-glass cabinet fronts trick the eye into seeing depth and movement in a space that might otherwise appear compact and cloistered.

Even while providing a note of glamour, the ceiling-hung chandelier also offers the reminder that many of the best galley kitchen ideas challenge knee-jerk assumptions about what belongs (and doesn’t) in a confined, primarily utilitarian space.

A plan for a small galley kitchen. Both the pantry and refrigerator are located close to the main food preparation area, with adequate landing zones next to each. Located on the edge of the kitchen, both pantry and refrigerator are accessible to snack seekers without having to cross the main food preparation or cleanup areas. The galley kitchens found in most homes are just replicas of the small but efficient cooking spaces found on military ships. The design of the kitchen entails a simple two-wall design and the space in-between just wide enough for a few steps backward or forward. Depending on how creative you choose to be, these small kitchens can actually be as stylish, if not more stylish, like several other larger kitchens.
